The Gastonia ABC System's retail operations were established by a local referendum held on September 19,
1967. The results of the referendum were: FOR - 5409, AGAINST - 5381. Retail sales began on December 1, 1967. A mixed beverage referendum was held on September 24, 1985, with the following results: FOR - 7426, AGAINST - 6549. This referendum provided for the sale of mixed beverages within the City limits of Gastonia.
Local oversight is provided by a five-member Board of Directors appointed by the City Council of Gastonia. Members serve three-year terms and the Board's authority is defined by GS18B-701. Daily management of the System rests with the Executive Director, who is hired by the Board and is paid as are all employees from the System's revenues.
ABC System means a local board and all ABC stores operated by it, it's law enforcement operation, and all it’s employees.
Administrative oversight is provided by the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission (NCABC) as established by GS18B-200. The commission is located in Raleigh and a link is provided on this website: http://www.ncabc.com.
When stores operate: No ABC store shall be open and no ABC state employee shall sell alcoholic beverage between 9:00 PM and 9:00 AM. The local board shall otherwise determine opening and closing hours of its stores.
No ABC store shall be open and no ABC store employee shall sell alcoholic beverages on any Sunday, New Years Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day. A local board may otherwise determine the days on which its stores shall be closed.

The retail price of spirituous liquor sold in ABC stores shall be uniform throughout the state unless otherwise provided by the ABC law. A price book is published every February, May, August, and November. Monthly discounts are offered on select items and featured in the stores that carry these items.
Special Order: If a product is listed in the NC price book and you intend to purchase it on a regular basis, we will consider stocking it on our shelves for your convenience. If it is not listed in the price book, the item can be special ordered by full cases only and must be paid for in advance. All special orders are placed through local stores.
Age Restriction: All persons employed by a local board shall be at least 18 years of age unless waived by the NC ABC Commission. The Gastonia Board requires that all employees involved in a selling capacity be 21 years old.
All persons entering a Gastonia ABC store must be 21 years old unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
